Here is a before and after of what a highly pigmented toning shampoo and conditioner will do on darker blonde hair.
I always assumed that toning shampoo wouldn’t work on darker blonde hair either, but lo and behold I was wrong. What you’re seeing here is that because my hair was not light enough to turn white, the purple pigment in the toning shampoo built up and turned my hair a darker silver color, as opposed to white.
This was done using Clairol’s Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner. If you want to achieve a color like this on hair that is not light enough to turn white, I highly recommend Shimmer Lights as it is the most densely pigmented toning shampoo and conditioner that I’ve found.
The build up of color also has something to do with the way I applied it. Once I met a girl who had the most glorious white hair I’ve ever seen. I asked her how she did it, and this is what she told me:1) Approximately 20 minutes before showering, dampen hair in the sink and towel dry.
2) Apply toning shampoo to damp hair as if it were hair dye. Be sure to spread the shampoo over your hair as much as possible, but do ensure that all parts of your hair are covered evenly with color.
3) Gently work through hair but do not lather. If you begin to see small, white, foamy bubbles, stop.
4) Cover hair with a shower cap or plastic bag (it doesn’t much matter which you choose, but definitely pick something because you will start dripping)
5) Wait anywhere between 5-20 minutes depending on desired level of color deposit. (I would recommend the full 20 the first time if you’re going from the color pictured above/hair that isn’t toned at all, and then anywhere from 5-10 minutes when you re-do it)
6) Get in the shower, wet hair, lather, rinse. Repeat. Literally. It’s going to take a LONG time to get that much shampoo out of your hair. The quickest way I’ve found to do it is to wet your hair, lather, squeeze/rinse out the foam/bubbles, wet hair a little more, lather again, repeat the process.
7) Apply the Shimmer Lights conditioner (this is NECESSARY if you want the pictured color. Shimmer Lights toning conditioner is literally the most pigmented toning conditioner I’ve EVER come across. It’s as pigmented, if not more, than the shampoo) to your hair after you’ve squeezed out excess water. Again, try to get as even a layer of conditioner as you can (since, you know, you’ll be doing this without a mirror).
8) RE-COVER YOUR HAIR WITH A SHOWER CAP. This will prevent the conditioner from residually washing out or getting diluted by water as you go about the rest of your shower.
9) Rinse your hair as the very last thing you do before getting out of the shower. Do not over rinse! (and this goes for both the shampoo and conditioner) The second you’re 99% sure that all the shampoo/conditioner is out of your hair, stop and get your hair out from under the water. (if you continue to rinse you’ll be washing out some of the pigment that you just deposited into your hair, especially if the water in your area is harsh/contains a lot of chemicals)There you go! That’s how I got my hair that color, and that’s how I currently maintain my white hair. You don’t need to do it every time you shower, just when you notice the color is fading too much for your liking. Do, however, use the toning shampoo + conditioner every time you shower, leaving each in for 3-5 minutes.
I hope I’ve helped! Sorry this was a bit long. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to follow the click through link and leave a message in my ask box!
